The Water Resources and Irrigation Development Division Office, Bardiya, is a provincial government agency responsible for development and management of water resources and irrigation infrastructures. It was first established in 2072 BS as an Irrigation Development Sub-Division and took its current name in 2074 BS. The office’s main mandate is to plan and develop surface, lift, and modern irrigation systems across the district, as well as expand existing ones. In the Terai-Madhesh region, the office handles surface irrigation projects between 500 and 5,000 hectares, and lift irrigation systems covering 25 to 100 hectares. It also focuses on water-induced disaster management such as flood control, by building river embankments of up to 10 kilometers. To make sure these structures last, the office regularly maintains both its irrigation and disaster control projects. Another key goal is to make existing medium-scale irrigation systems run more smoothly. To achieve this, the office trains local users and gradually hands over the management of these systems to Water Users' Associations (WUAs).
